What’s New in Microsoft Fabric – September 2025 Feature Update

Microsoft Fabric September 2025 Updates - Governance and DLP

Microsoft continues to push boundaries with its unified data platform, Microsoft Fabric. The September 2025 release brings a well-balanced mix of performance boosts, AI integrations, and improved collaboration tools. While there’s plenty in this update for technical teams and business users alike, the spotlight this month is clearly on governance and data protection.

Overall Updates at a Glance

Below are some of the key improvements in this update:

  • One of the most notable updates in this release is the enhanced Dataflows capability. With faster data processing, improved transformation functions, and broader connectivity, users can now manage and manipulate large volumes of data more efficiently. The new interface also simplifies data preparation, allowing users to easily track dependencies and automate refreshes across complex pipelines.
  • Microsoft Fabric continues to expand its support for hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This update introduces new connectors that make it easier to pull data from both cloud-based services and on-premises systems. Whether you’re working with Azure, AWS, SQL Server, or third-party applications, Fabric now offers greater flexibility and fewer barriers when integrating data sources.
  • Working together just got easier. The September update enhances Fabric’s collaboration capabilities, enabling teams to share reports, dashboards, and datasets with granular access controls. Improved version tracking and workspace organization mean users can now co-author content more smoothly and ensure that stakeholders are always working with the most up-to-date insights.
  • Fabric is doubling down on AI. The platform now includes deeper integration with Microsoft’s ML and AI tools, enabling data scientists and analysts to embed machine learning models directly within dataflows. This allows for more predictive analytics and automated insights, helping businesses act faster and smarter.
  • Microsoft has made several backend improvements to increase the overall speed and responsiveness of the Fabric platform. Users will notice quicker load times for dashboards and reports, more efficient query execution, and enhanced support for larger datasets, which is a crucial upgrade for enterprise-scale implementations.
  • Users now have access to new advanced visualization options that provide more interactive and customizable ways to display data. These enhancements make it easier to tell data-driven stories, whether you’re building executive dashboards or diving into granular analytics.
  • Power BI and Microsoft Fabric are now more tightly integrated than ever. Users can seamlessly switch between building models in Fabric and visualizing them in Power BI, without the need for complex connectors or manual exports. This integration streamlines workflows and empowers business users to build sophisticated reports with ease.

Spotlight on Governance and DLP

  • The new Govern tab brings all governance tools into one place inside the OneLake catalog. In this tab, admins can see insights, recommended actions, and links to tools & learning resources, along with a clear view of policies, compliance settings, and governance tasks. The Govern tab is now Generally Available within the OneLake Catalog. Instead of switching between different menus, admins now have a single, simplified way to monitor and manage their data estate easily. Copilot support also extends into this experience, letting users interact with their data to uncover insights.

  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Policies are now built directly into Fabric, giving organizations a way to protect sensitive data and define how these data are handled. When the DLP policy is defined in the Purview Portal, they will automatically identify an item, match them against the DLP policy conditions, and take action as needed. If there is an issue, admins will get real-time alerts with full details. These policies help teams to collaborate securely, while preventing accidental leaks (such as sharing confidential information with the wrong person/team). The DLP Policies are now Generally Available for the OneLake data. Businesses can start building data security into their workflows right away.

  • Purview Protection Policies add another additional layer of control to the data. They let admins define how sensitive data should be secured across Fabric. These policies are associated with a sensitivity label (like “Internal” or “Confidential”). When a label is applied, the policy ensures only the designated people have access, while everyone else is blocked. This provides an additional layer of security on top of DLP making sure that even when data is accessed, the right restrictions will apply.

Together, these governance updates reassure enterprises that Fabric can drive innovation while keeping data secure and under control.

Wrapping Up

The September 2025 Microsoft Fabric update reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to delivering a powerful, end-to-end data platform that caters to modern enterprise needs. With performance upgrades, AI-driven enhancements, and greater integration across tools, this release makes Fabric an even more essential part of any data ecosystem. Whether you’re a data engineer, analyst, or business leader, the new capabilities introduced this month will help you work faster, collaborate better, and make more informed decisions.

While this update is packed with useful upgrades, the governance and DLP features are the real game-changers. They signal Microsoft’s intent to make Fabric not only an analytics platform, but also a secure, compliant foundation for organizations who don’t want to compromise on data protection. These updates are here to stay, and they’ll make a big difference in how organizations protect and manage their data. If you’d like help getting these features into practice or shaping a governance strategy tailored to your organization, our Microsoft Fabric Consulting Services can help you put them into practice.
