VNB Consulting assisted a public utility company to migrate their BizTalk Server 2016 environment to the latest BizTalk Server 2020 version.
The customer is a large public utility company serving a significant population in a suburban region. As a primary provider of electricity, water, and wastewater treatment services, the organization operates a complex infrastructure supporting a vast consumer base. Committed to delivering reliable and cost-effective solutions, the customer is focused on maintaining operational excellence to meet the evolving needs of its community.
The customer's critical business operations relied heavily on BizTalk Server 2016-based middleware applications. To benefit from the advanced features of BizTalk Server 2020 and ensure a modern technology landscape, they sought a seamless upgrade with minimal disruption. Additionally, the customer wanted the BizTalk Server 2020 deployment on a newer Windows Server version for extended support. Given the high business impact of these integrations, a zero-impact transition was paramount.
Following a comprehensive assessment of the client's BizTalk Server environment, middleware interfaces, and integrations, VNB Apps and Integration team developed a phased migration strategy. This approach ensured a seamless and risk-mitigated transition of mission-critical applications by enabling a concurrent operation of the old and new environments. Moreover, it presented an opportunity to re-engineer existing applications with pain points, facilitating process enhancements and optimizations. Our team initiated the project by meticulously analyzing the intricate dependencies within the existing BizTalk Server 2016 environment. We categorized each integration interface based on its complexity to prioritize the migration process and minimize disruptions to the customer’s operations. We deployed a robust BizTalk Server 2020 infrastructure that included setting up development, quality assurance (QA), and production environments on Windows Server 2022 within the customer’s on-premises data center. To mitigate risks and validate our migration approach, we strategically migrated a representative sample of integration interfaces from each complexity category to the development environment. Through rigorous testing and workload simulations, we ensured that the migrated interfaces functioned flawlessly in the new BizTalk Server 2020 environment. We then successfully migrated all the integration interfaces to the new BizTalk Server version. To enhance resiliency of the BizTalk Server environment, our team proposed a high-availability (HA) architecture. We developed a comprehensive infrastructure design document highlighting the benefits of HA, including reduced downtime, improved data integrity, and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities. The customer enthusiastically endorsed our proposal, and we successfully implemented an Always On Availability Group on SQL Server to provide a robust and fault-tolerant solution.
