A century-old industry leader, the customer is a renowned company specializing in the electric power engineering and testing. Their innovative solutions help clients improve reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize operations. They are also committed to promoting safety and sustainability in the electric power industry, focusing on renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, and grid modernization.
The customer wanted to identify a roadmap to design and build an enterprise grade Data & Analytics Platform leveraging Microsoft Fabric to eliminate their existing business challenges. Their primary data source, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, offered insufficient reporting capabilities and time-consuming data extraction. They currently relied on JET Analytics which provides built-in or customized cubes and data warehouses created on top of Business Central data to fulfill their extended reporting needs. The customer's existing analytics processes also faces significant challenges. Repeated data pulls and manual transformations lead to multiple sources of truth. Accessing historical data is difficult, and users heavily depended on internal database tools with limited capabilities. They also faced significant challenges in their reporting processes which included Excel crashes due to large data volumes, manual processes for time-consuming financial reports, currency translation errors, data duplication, and poor system integration. To streamline operations and improve accuracy, the customer required enhanced automation, better data integration, and a robust, centralized data warehouse and reporting tools.
After a comprehensive analysis of the customer's current state and discussions with their different internal teams, our team proposed a strategy and roadmap centered around a centralized Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse and Power BI for visualization along with various workloads of Fabric. This approach consolidates data from various sources into a single repository, eliminating redundant data pulls and manual transformations. This not only ensures data consistency but also improves historical data accessibility and reduces the risk of multiple sources of truth. Power BI will empower users with interactive reports, streamlining the reporting process and providing timely insights for decision-making. This combination of a centralized data warehouse and Power BI will enhance data management, improve operational efficiency, and support better business outcomes. This initial strategy sets the groundwork for advanced analytics and real-time data processing in the future. Our solution leverages Microsoft Fabric, a future-proof platform designed to centralize data management and streamline reporting and analysis. Leveraging Fabric, businesses can consolidate data from diverse sources into a single, unified Data Warehouse. After multiple analysis and identifying pros and cons, we recommended integrating the existing JET Analytics/Data Warehouse setup with Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse to optimize the solution. Fabric Pipelines facilitate the seamless transfer of data from JET Warehouse to the Fabric Warehouse, ensuring efficient data loading and organization. This approach will solve the need for a centralized data storage location while leveraging existing investments.
