Century-old Electrical Diagnostics Innovator Accelerates Insights Using Microsoft Fabric for Business Central

Overview

VNB Consulting partnered with a global leader in electrical power system diagnostics to modernize their analytics ecosystem using Microsoft Fabric with Business Central data. By establishing a unified and governed data architecture, the customer eliminated data silos, improved historical visibility across subsidiaries, and enabled faster, data-driven decision-making at scale.

Customer Profile

Headquartered in MA, USA the customer has been a recognized authority in electrical diagnostics for nearly a century. Their solutions, software, and expert services help utilities and energy engineers assess grid health, prevent outages, and optimize electrical asset performance worldwide.

Customer Situation

Need for Unified Data Analytics Platform

As the volume, sources, and frequency of diagnostic data increased—both from internal systems and international subsidiaries, the customer struggled with fragmented data estates. Information lived in inconsistent formats across multiple legacy environments, which led to:

  • Multiple versions of the truth
  • Manual data preparation for reporting
  • Limited historical traceability
  • Slower decision cycles for engineering & business operations

Although Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central provided built-in financial reports, making these reports dynamic and integrating them with the data from other systems proved increasingly difficult.

Reporting depended heavily on legacy tooling and manual stitching. The lack of a centralized, governed data layer connected to Business Central slowed operational agility and strategic planning.

Implementing Microsoft Fabric for Advanced Analytics

VNB designed and implemented a modernized, unified data estate anchored on Microsoft Fabric with Business Central as the core operational source. This served as the foundation for scalable analytics, data governance, and future AI/ML initiatives. Key architectural outcomes included:

Key architectural outcomes included:

  • Central Microsoft Fabric Data Lake as the enterprise landing zone
  • Continuous ingestion pipelines from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central + flat sources
  • Bronze/Silver/Gold Medallion architecture for standardized curation
  • Fabric Data Warehouse for governing semantic models
  • Power BI for enterprise self-service analytics and C-executive Dashboards like Scorecards

VNB additionally implemented CI/CD for analytics deployment to standardize versioning, accelerate changes, and support multi-environment governance.

This enabled Finance, Sales, and Operations to move from manual extraction + spreadsheet stitching — to governed, near real-time insights.

VNB continues to expand the Microsoft Fabric platform to include real-time alerting using Fabric Data Activator and predictive modelling, enabling analytics on Business Central data with Microsoft Fabric to forecast asset performance and power system behavior. This evolution will enable proactive response patterns, intelligent forecasting, and continuously improving operational visibility.

Customer Benefits

  • Eliminated fragmented reporting and inconsistent truth sets
  • Reduced manual preparation and dependency on legacy reporting by integrating Business Central data into Fabric
  • Accelerated time-to-insight through unified analytics for Business Central using Microsoft Fabric
  • Analytics became repeatable, governed, and scalable
  • Platform now supports advanced scenarios: ML, real-time detection & predictive models
